Intergenerational co-residence and young couple’s time use in China

Intergenerational families play an important role in providing informal care and support. However, how the intergenerational living arrangements shape time allocation of young couples remains unclear, a more comprehensive analysis, where downward support upward are distinguished, is needed. Using “2008 Chinese Time Use Survey” seemingly unrelated regression, we document paid work time, housework adult childcare differ for working-age who live with none, relatively young, old parents. We find that direction changes according to age coresident Compared those do not parents, parents spend less on care, have rural wives elderly even childcare. These findings highlight importance distinguishing help studying high cost China.
